Think before you clink: Your guide to Stellenbosch’s latest whiskey bar

“LIKE THE FOX, I RUN WITH THE HUNTED” – HANK

Still want to impress your friends but have run out of other people’s jokes and have refreshed the SU Just Kidding page too much? Well tell them that craft gin is out, whiskey is in, and that Hank’s Olde Irish Bar is the perfect place to try it out.

Stellenbosch’s latest hotspot hosted its opening night on 24 August. The anticipation had been building for quite some time due to its prestigious location above Stellenbosch’s oldest pub, De Akker.

Just when you thought Dorp Street didn’t have any more room for fun and quirky bars and restaurants, popular franchise, Hank’s proved us wrong. Located in an atmospheric corner of Stellenbosch’s high street, the bar, dedicated to the appreciation of whiskey, harbours knowledgeable staff that encourage the sampling and sharing of whiskey over conversations about its history and origin.

“You can absolutely drink whiskey on a budget and still be able to taste and enjoy the different whiskey profiles, even as a student,” said Michael Madison, Hank’s bartender and Stellenbosch University (SU) Investment Management student.

The design of the new watering hole showcases its well-stocked whiskey selection and scotch and bourbon menu that offers over 30 carefully selected whiskeys from around the world, including local favourites like Three Ships and Bain’s Cape Mountain Whiskey.

Gemma Haywood, a Sports Science Masters student, speaks of the bar’s aesthetic.

“I enjoy how sophisticated it is compared to other bars in Stellenbosch. I definitely feel like you need to get a little bit dressed up, a little bit classy…like something out of an old movie.”

As a drinking bar, do not expect to find meals on the menu, but indulge in a few light snacks to accompany the evening’s beverages. This is an old-school glamour meets 1920’s gangster movie with its pressed tin ceilings and dim lighting. Inviting chaise lounges that seat guests in luxuriant comfort and style line the far wall for guests who seek more privacy, whilst the floor is open and spacious with elevated tables and bar stools.

“It’s a cosy saloon bar that you can sit around in and listen to jazz, soul, funk and MoTown – it’s basically Peaky Blinders on Dorp street,” said Rob Southworth, Hank’s co-owner.

For those that are still maturing their whiskey taste buds, the bar houses a variety of other spirits that include its growing selection of wines, beers on tap and list of classic cocktails.

“This bar has a wide whiskey selection that allows you to understand the flavours of whiskey and understand your palette in a space that you can just relax in with friends,” said Michael Madison, Hank’s bartender and SU Agriculture student.

Southworth agreed, adding:

“We still do massive focuses on gins, tequilas, beers and wine from surrounding areas like the Swatlands and Hermanus for those who aren’t too keen on whiskey.”

Open from 5PM till late, Hank’s is the perfect destination for post-work drinks or a leisurely evening with friends.

Remember, the best way to break the ice is to order a drink without it.
