The Stellenbosch University (SU) student who was accidentally hit by an oncoming vehicle last night sustained minor injuries.
The accident occurred at 20h30 last night at the pedestrian crossing on the corner of Neethling and Victoria Street.
Both the driver and the student in a wheelchair wish to remain anonymous.
According to SU spokesperson, Martin Viljoen, the Head of the Disability Unit in the Centre for Student Counselling and Development spoke to the student in the wheelchair and said that the person was injured on the left side, but seemed to be “ok”.
The student was taken to hospital but was discharged approximately two hours later and was deemed uninjured.
The driver, also an SU student, remained on the scene after the accident and looked both shocked and remorseful.
Viljoen further said that the driver was offered counselling owing to the accident.
“The car drove out of the Neelsie parking lot and turned right onto Victoria. I heard the tyres screech and the crunch of metal,” said Mercedes Kreissel (19), a second year BA PPE student and eyewitness at the scene. “When I got to the accident, the driver was in shock and [was] very sorry about not having seen the pedestrian on the crossing.”
Ambulance services and SAPS were quick to arrive on the scene.
