Stellenbosch University’s (SU) Culture Committee will be hosting a virtual variety show this year as lockdown regulations have resulted in the cancellations of various other cultural events.
The Kultuur Komitee (KuKo) announced on its Instagram page, on 13 July, that they would be hosting The KuKo Variety Show, following the cancellation of the university’s cultural events including Toneelfees and SU Acapella (SUAC) on 13 May.

According to Philip Visage, chairperson of KuKo, the idea behind the variety show was to capture all the cancelled events into a new competition.
“The variety show allows for students to showcase their art, photos, musical abilities, dancing and writing abilities,” he said.
Furthermore, the show presented KuKo with the opportunity to engage with and promote the cultural talents of the students, while being dispersed right across the country, said Visage.

The committee thought it was necessary to ensure that they were still facilitating cultural activity amongst the student community, even if it was virtual, said Lukhanyo Ngamlana, public relations officer of KuKo.
“The lockdown period has been terrible, but a few good things have come out of it. One of those being content creation,” he said.
There has been a surge on social media platforms, such as Tik Tok, blogs, podcasts and Youtube channels, and KuKo wanted to create an event that spoke to this, said Ngamlana.

Blaine Josephs, former chairperson of KuKo, believes that the show is a good initiative, especially during a time of a global pandemic.
“I think this is a time where the arts can discover new avenues to promote our work and artistry,” said Josephs.
