Outside centre for the Maties team, Kyle Steyn, will play his rugby in Kimberley next season for the Griquas.
Steyn, who has been a formidable part of Maties’ success in this year’s Varsity Cup, will join the Griquas after the Varsity Cup on a six-month contract with the option to extend for another year, depending on performance.
Steyn, who recently completed his postgraduate PGCE and was enrolled for a PGDip in Transport and Logistics this year, praised Varsity Cup for the role it played in putting him in this position.
“Varsity Cup played a massive role in terms of creating a platform for exposure, but it also created an opportunity to play rugby on a higher level than club rugby and adapting to that new level played a big role in my development.”
Steyn has played six FNB Varsity Cup matches so far this season, while he represented the Maties Sevens team in the 2015 and 2016 Varsity Sports Sevens. – André Huisamen
