Critically acclaimed local film Knuckle City centralised the theme of toxic masculinity according to the film’s director Jahmil X.T. Qubeka.

The Oscar-entry film screened at the Toyota US Woordfees on 13 March.

“I would say the biggest theme of the film is probably the idea around the construct of what we understand to be manhood on an individual level, but also as society,” Qubeka told MatieMedia

“So, it’s a deconstruction of manhood and particularly what we would term toxic behavior,” Qubeka said.

Faniswa Yisa, who played the role of Mother Hen in Knuckle City, also believed that there was a strong theme of toxic masculinity, as well as the abuse of women, in the film. Yisa further said that she hopes the audience will discuss these themes.

“I hope when people watch it, they’ll talk about the cycle of violence,” she said.

Despite the significant theme of toxic masculinity, Qubeka also hopes his audience will critically engage with their own unique understanding of the film.

“Through its DNA, it’s made to entertain and to provoke thought,” said Qubeka.
