Coffee + Art = Synergy

On the outskirts of Stellenbosch, there is a lifestyle centre where creativity and craftsmanship are at the core of most businesses who call it their base. The Woodmill Centre is home to The Boomhuis Art Gallery, which is where one will find the fair-skinned, blue-eyed artist Danielle Jordaan (23).

Jordaan’s gentleness shouldn’t be mistaken for weakness, as she is an entrepreneur and artist who tries to inspire any person she comes across. In February 2019, Jordaan hosted the first of many creative ‘Paint with Coffee’ workshops. During these workshops, she guides attendees through the process of creating a piece of art with the everyday condiment of coffee. The use of coffee as a medium according to Jordaan, “is because it does not have an intimidating nature, it is found in and known by most households.”

According to Jordaan, most people attending the ‘Paint with Coffee’ workshops do so out of “pure curiosity.” She is motivated to continue these workshops, as it provides her with “immense joy to see people leave the workshop feeling inspired to create and make art from a medium as simple as instant coffee”.  She reveals that becoming an art teacher has never been a dream of hers, however “sharing [my] passion is something completely different,” she claims.

Jordaan completed a Diploma in Fine Art, majoring in painting, at Ruth Prowse School of Art in Woodstock, Cape Town. It was at this establishment where she got the opportunity to study with individuals from all walks of life. Jordaan admits that studying with people who come from different backgrounds and who differ in age, granted her the opportunity to widen her thought-patterns. With an open mind, she is able to question themes of everyday life, from which her art then flows.

On Thursday the 3rd of October 2019 The Boomhuis Art Gallery will be hosting The NOW Exhibition, where Jordaan will exhibit her most recent piece of art. This piece is close to her heart as it is in collaboration with her boyfriend, Noah Medlin (23). They met earlier this year whilst Jordaan visited her sister, Lené Jordaan (20), who is studying in America. During their long-distance relationship, Jordaan experimented with engraving on mirrors and synergised her new method with a poem written by Noah.

The artwork which will be exhibited is produced by an all-female group of artists which, according to Jordaan, is very fitting when looking at the current uproar against gender-based violence in South Africa. She also agrees with the notion that women should support one another.

The NOW Exhibition is based on the idea that, due to the busy lives we lead and how future-orientated human beings have become; people are “missing out on opportunities to celebrate the present”, Jordaan explains.  Each artist was given the task to delve into the theme of how one can pause the present and create a lasting moment in time.
