The Stellenbosch-based alternative Afrikaans band, Kontras, plan to drop their upcoming debut album, Ruimtevaarder, in September, said Andrew Veldman, guitarist of Kontras.
The twelve-track album represents the band’s journey through space and time, said Daniël Botha, Kontras’ drummer.
“We hope that some of our fans can go on their own adventure through the album,” said Botha.
Tackling tough themes
The band’s first single from the album, Velde, was released in March and tackles themes of loss and frustration, according to Jacques Groenewald, the bands’ lead vocalist.
The Velde music video emphasises the importance of living in the moment, he said.
“We need to understand that [even though] times are tough, we’ll always make it through to the other side,” said Groenewald.
Music video receives a popular response
“The music video has garnered over a thousand views in its first week which was a big milestone for us,” said Louwrens Labuschagne, the bass guitarist .
According to Arnold van der Walt, band manager and director of the music video, they knew from the beginning that the main concept of the video “had to be a narrative that viewers can emotionally connect to”.
“Velde is merely part one of a bigger picture,” said Van der Walt.
According to Armand Spies, fan of Kontras, it is amazing to see the local band doing so well.
“I absolutely loved [the Velde music video], Hugo Brand (director of photography) did an amazing job,” Spies said.
The band has come a long way since their first single, Kopstamp, said Spies.
More music on the way
Before the album releases in September, the band will release more singles from the album, as well as music videos, said Veldman.
“We’re looking forward to the next upcoming release, coming out just in time for Mother’s Day,” said Veldman.
